Technische Universität Berlin (TU Berlin) - Faculty V of Mechanical Engineering and Transport Systems – Institute of Land and Sea Transport Systems and the German Aerospace Center (DLR) jointly invite applications for an initial five year position for a: 

University Professor – salary grade W2 in the field of “Novel Train Systems” with Head of department “New Rail Vehicles” - at the Institute of Vehicle Concepts at the German Aerospace Center (DLR), with an option of either limited or indefinite renewal.

 The DLR is the national aeronautics and space, energy and transport research centre of the Federal Republic of Germany with more than 8000 employees. The central topic of the Institute for Vehicle Concepts at DLR is the development of future technology systems for sustainable, safe and affordable vehicle generations on road and rail. The institute's contributions range from conception and design, construction, calculation and simulation to the representation of research demonstrators, components and vehicles.


Working Field:

The W2 professorship at TU-Berlin, represents the topic “Novel Train Systems” in the Transportation degree program. The appointee will be on leave with a reduced teaching load (2 SWH) for DLR and takes over the lead of the “New Rail Vehicles” department at the DLR Institute of Vehicle Concepts in Berlin-Adlershof.



·         assessing, modelling and simulation of the load collectives on vehicles in different fields of application

·         application of new materials, taking into account rail vehicle requirements such as fire protection, crash-worthiness, optimized use of space, costs of manufacturing, disposal, life cycle assessment and approval

·         systematic reflection of operations and customer friendliness in consideration of comfort, noise behavior and demographic change

·         efficient energy management for the operation of modern vehicles, reduction of driving resistances through light weight and structure optimization.



Candidates must qualify for appointment according to the requirements of § 100 BerlHG, including an appropriate university degree, an excellent scientific record demonstrated by a PhD and multi-year industrial or equivalent experience as well as pedagogical didactic qualifications, to be proven by a teaching portfolio (for more Information see TUB Website, quick access no. 144242). Furthermore, extensive experience in the acquisition and implementation of industry and publicly funded major research projects is expected. Didactic skills, internationally recognized research activity, social skills and networking in the relevant scientific community complete the requirements.
