DENMARK: Passengers travelling on Arriva services in western Denmark gained free onboard wi-fi access on May 26.

Danish firm Network Zone Relations has equipped 29 Alstom Lint DMUs used in Jylland with Moovbox wi-fi access points and routers supplied by UK company Moovera Networks. The Moovbox links the train to 3's cellular broadband network, with a 7·2 Mbps connection which will also be used for CCTV, telematics and GPS-based vehicle tracking.

Free internet access is partly funded through advertising on the wi-fi landing page. 'If public transport is to be a real alternative to the car, it is important to constantly develop and improve the product offered to passengers', said Arriva spokesman Jan Wildau. 'Free access to the internet can give public transport the advantage that will enable people choose to take the train instead of the car. It will be a win for both the environment and congestion.'
