Classroom in a tank wagon

06 February 2012

ROMANIA: A tank wagon is being used as a training vehicle by open access freight operator Grup Feroviar Roman and oil company Petrom.

Converted at a cost of €40 000, the wagon is stabled at GFR’s Brazi depot, where it is used to train drivers, shunters, terminal staff and the emergency services in the handling of hazardous chemicals including petroleum products. The ‘classroom’ has been split into two parts, one housing equipment for the transport of liquids, the other for gases.

The two companies expect the wagon to travel around the Romanian network to freight terminals and marshalling yards, enabling training and incident management simulations to be carried out locally.

GFR decided to develop a dedicated training wagon after a visit to the Schwechat refinery near Wien.
