Ergomechanical back support

By: 01 August 2005

FOLLOWING earlier scientific research into optimum back posture (RG 11.04 p747), Grammer AG used the Roma exhibition to display its first production seat with an automatically-adjusting back support.

Just released on the market, but not yet ordered, the ergomechanical seat is designed to optimise support for the passenger's back. When the seat is upright, the back cushion follows the shape of the spine. As the seat reclines, the cushion moves forward and a mechanical linkage causes the lower part of the back swab to curve outwards, so that it will still support the passenger's lower back in the more relaxed position.

The new seat draws on Grammer's successful ICE design, which has been supplied for DB's ICE3 trainsets and the Spanish Velaro E variant now being delivered. The company is supplying the same design for the new loco-hauled coaches on order for Saudi Railways Organisation, and they will also be used in DB's ICE1 refurbishment programme (p497).
