UK: The ULTra personal rapid transit system serving business car parking areas at London Heathrow Airport Terminal 5 has begun carrying air passengers on a limited trial basis, following a period of live testing with airport staff.

'Testing is going very well', a spokesman told Railway Gazette International on May 5. A full public service is now expected to be launched by July, with 21 four-seat rubber-tyre pod vehicles operating 22 h a day on the 3·8 km T-shaped network.

  • Supplier ULTra PRT has formed a Singapore-based joint venture with Fairwood Consulting to implement ULTra systems in Asia. ULTra CEO Phil Smith sees India as a 'tremendous opportunity', with two build-operate-transfer PRT projects 'under active development'.
