MALAYSIA: Kuala Lumpur transport operator Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd has revealed details of its proposed 7bn ringgit light rail extension programme. Finance will be provided through internally-generated funds and Islamic bonds.

The Kelana Jaya automated light metro extension will be 17 km long with 13 stations and run from Kelana Jaya station through Subang, USJ and Alam Megah to Putra Heights.

The Ampang LRT extension consists of 13 stations on a 17·7 km alignment starting at Sri Petaling station, passing through Puchong and Kinrara and ending at Putra Heights, where the two extensions will connect.

The stations will be equipped with modern facilities and access for mobility-impaired passengers. The scope of work also includes an additional 13 six-car trains for Ampang LRT and 35 four-car trains for the Kelana Jaya line.

Prasarana is expected to issue prequalification notices shortly so that contracts for civil works can be awarded in early 2010. Both lines are expected to be commissioned by the end of 2012.
