RUSSIA: Following Alstom's acquisition of a 25% stake in Transmashholding, on June 6 the companies confirmed details of their ongoing project to develop a 'reliable and economical' electric multiple-unit for the Russian market.

The ED10 modular EMU platform will offer a range of regional and suburban options combining modern standards of passenger comfort and technology with 'particularly competitive' purchase and maintenance costs.

Each EMU will have four to 12 cars, giving a capacity up to 1 500 passengers, with provision for multiple working. Top speed will be 160 km/h, with asynchronous traction motors and a bogie designed to offer a better ride and lower track forces than current designs. A range of interior options will be offered, with passenger information systems, modern HVAC, LED lighting and wheelchair access from high and low platforms.

Design work is being undertaken by the TRTrans joint venture of Alstom and TMH. Most of the development will be carried out in Russia, with the first prototype trainset scheduled to roll out by the end of 2012.
