London King's Cross western concourse opens

19 Mar 2012

UK: Following an official ceremony on March 14 the 7500 m2 western concourse at London King's Cross opened to passengers on March 18, providing a significant increase in passenger capacity at the East Coast Main Line terminus.

The main feature of the new concourse is a 20 m high semi-circular roof supported on 16 steel 'tree form' columns radiating from a central funnel. It was designed by John McAslan + Partners, engineered by Arup and built by Vinci.

The western concourse is more than three times the size of the disjointed concourse built in the 1970s under 'temporary' planning consent, which is to be demolished by September 2013 to create a public area designed by Stanton Williams.
