North Galilee Basin Rail project management consultant appointed

03 Nov 2014

AUSTRALIA: The Adani Mining subsidiary of Indian power and infrastructure group Adani has appointed Parsons Brinckerhoff as project management consultant for its A$16·5bn Carmichael integrated mine, port and railway project in Queensland.

The coal development includes the construction of the North Galilee Basin Rail line, a privately-owned multi-user 388 km heavy haul route connecting the future mine to a new export terminal at the Port of Abbot Point. The 1 435 mm gauge route is to be built by South Korean construction company POSCO E&C, and according to Adani will ‘drive lower costs for Adani and other producers with the longest, highest-capacity trains for coal haulage in Australia.’

As project management consultant, Parsons Brinckerhoff will be responsible for managing and providing assurance services for the engineering, procurement, and construction contracts.

Environmental approvals were obtained in September, and construction is expected to begin in Q1 2015 with the first coal production in 2017. A mine yield of 60 mtpa is anticipated, over a 60-year operating life.
