The Channel Tunnel and its High Speed Links

04 November 2007

Book review

by Nicholas Comfort

A COMPREHENSIVE 256-page history of the Channel Tunnel, from proposals through construction to operation.

Details of the construction of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link are included, unravelling the complexities of the entities involved and what happened when. There are chapters on the French and Belgian high speed links, and the various types of rolling stock using the tunnel, including the saga of the Nightstar overnight stock which ended up in Canada.

There is a chapter on the 1996 fire, and another looks at the disruption caused by stowaways on freight trains, when the author was advising the government of the effect this was having on whisky exports.
