Berlin opts for 99 trams

20 July 2009

GERMANY: Following successful trials of four prototype Flexity Berlin trams since September, city transport operator BVG has placed an order with Bombardier for 99 vehicles at a cost of €305·3m. This includes 40 vehicles 40 m long and 59 of the 31 m version. A further 33 are likely to be ordered by 2017.

The first 13 will be delivered this year. The new trams will replace around 240 older Tatra vehicles by 2017. The order is less than the 140 previously envisaged, because funding has been cut from €500m to €397·6m.
