DALLAS light rail operator DART completes its current expansion programme on December 9, six months ahead of schedule. Opening of the final 5·1 km of the Red line from Galatyn Park to Plano, with two intermediate stops, will bring the network to 70·8 km and 34 stations.
The final two-station extension of the Blue line from LBJ/Skillman to Garland opened on November 18, after a public celebration two days earlier. The network had been carrying around 60000 passengers on weekdays and this is expected to increase significantly.
DART hopes to start work shortly on a further phase of expansion, with lines to Carrollton, Farmers Branch, Irving, Fair Park and Pleasant Grove due to open between 2006 and 2012. However, President & CEO Gary Thomas told the city council's Transportation Committee at the end of October that some schemes may have to be delayed following a 20% downturn in local sales tax revenues.
