København Cityringen contractors selected

25 Nov 2010

DENMARK: At a board meeting on November 24 København metro authority Metroselskabet selected the Salini-led Copenhagen Metro Team consortium as preferred bidder to build the infrastructure and Ansaldo STS to supply rolling stock and railway equipment for the city’s DKr21·3bn Cityringen driverless metro project.

Ansaldo STS says it ‘has proposed a number of technical solutions’ for Cityringen worth around €700m, but the precise scope and price will be defined during final contract negotiations. Metroselskabet’s recommendation must be submitted to its owners, the municipalities of København and Frederiksberg and the Ministry of Transport, for approval before the contracts can be concluded.

‘We look forward to getting started, so we can give the capital a cohesive metro which will bind the city together’, said Metroselskabet CEO Henrik Plougmann Olsen.

The 15·5 km circular route will run in twin tunnels serving 17 stations. The line will provide interchanges to existing metro lines M1 and M2 at Kongens Nytorv and Frederiksberg, and to regional rail and S-tog services at København H, Østerport and Nørrebro. Work is due to start later this year with opening envisaged in 2018.

Ansaldo STS’s scope of work includes power supply, communications, SCADA, platform screen doors, CBTC signalling and a depot and control centre. Trains will be supplied by AnsaldoBreda. The bid also includes five years’ operation and maintenance, with the option of a further three years.

Once completed, Cityringen would operate as two routes. M3 trains will run both ways around the full circle while M4 would serve the eastern half from Nørrebro to København H via Østerport and Kongens Nytorv. The line is expected to carry 130 million passengers/year. Commercial operating speed will be 40 km/h and journey time for a complete circle will be around 24 min.

In October 2009 four consortia were invited to submit bids for the rolling stock and railway equipment; Ansaldo STS was the sole bidder.
