Melbourne to re-let franchises

17 June 2008

AUSTRALIA: The Victorian state government has called for expressions of interest to operate its urban rail services from 2009. The suburban trains are presently run by Connex Melbourne, and the Yarra Trams network is operated by the Metrolink joint venture of Transdev and Transfield Services Ltd.

Both franchises expire next year, and the state intends to launch a competitive tender for the replacement contracts. The Victorian Department of Infrastructure will manage the tendering process.

  • In response to Sir Rod Eddington's report on Melbourne's future transport needs (RG 5.08 p277), the government has moved to restructure the Department of Transport to implement its recommendations. Major Projects Victoria becomes part of the Department of Innovation, Industry & Regional Development.
