KTZ launches train wi-fi pilot project
KAZAKHSTAN: InfiNet Wireless has provided national railway KTZ with a wireless broadband network as part of a pilot project covering passenger trains, maintenance vehicles and stations on the 226 km route from Astana to Shchuchinsk.
Low cost and robustness were priorities, and the network uses small wireless devices fitted to the exterior of the vehicles. As well as providing passengers with internet access, the system will support CCTV and passenger alarm monitoring. The on-train network offered speeds of up to 80 Mb/s during trial running at up to 200 km/h.
‘Passengers are transmitting more and more data and requiring speed and consistent internet connectivity while on the move’, said Vladilen Yakunin, Director of InfiNet’s local wireless integration partner KRIS-Service Co. ‘InfiNet Wireless has been proven to provide this and can make the network a low-cost operation.’
