USA: Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority has awarded a joint venture of Skanska, Shimmick Construction and Herzog Contracting Corp a $772m contract to build the 8∙6 km Berryessa Extension of the BART metro network south from Warm Springs Station in Fremont to north San Jose.

The extension will include two stations at Milpitas and Berryessa, six level crossings and two over bridges. Work is scheduled to start in February and finish in 2016.

This is the first element of a plan to extend BART into Silicon Valley. The second 9∙6 km phase will include an 8∙2 km tunnel through San Jose, and end in Santa Clara. Construction will start once additional funding is secured.
