ITALY: Milano transport operator ATM is to purchase a further 15 Leonardo trainsets for metro Line M2 at a cost of €109m.

The order announced on March 29 forms an option on a €220m contract signed with AnsaldoBreda (now Hitachi Rail Italy) in 2012 for 30 six-car trainsets with options for up to 30 more. Of the base order, 25 trainsets are so far in service on Line M1 and 10 on Line M2. The remaining five trainsets for Line M1 are due to be in service by the end of June.

Like the base order, the option will be financed entirely by ATM. Deliveries are due to take place from late 2017 to August 2018, and the fleet will be commissioned throughout 2018. According to ATM, once the new trains are in service, the average age of the M2 fleet will drop from 27 to 16 years.

The 107 m long walkthrough trains have capacity for 1 232 passengers, and are equipped with air-conditioning and LED lighting. Their maximum speed is 90 km/h.
