NEG was very active in bidding for UK rail franchises, but during the 2010s switched focus to bidding for European contracts, notably in Germany:
- Rhein-Wupper-Bahn (RB 48) and Rhein-Münsterland-Express (RE 7) from December 2015;
- Rhein-Express (RE/RRX 5), from June 2019;
- Westfalen-Express (RE/RRX 6), from December 2019;
- Wupper-Express (RE 4), from December 2020.
From February 1 2022 NEG took over two routes from Abellio:
- NRW-Express (RE/RRX 1: Aachen – Hamm);
- Rhein-Hellweg-Express (RE11: Düsseldorf – Kassel).
NEG’s last UK franchise (c2c running the London − Southend Essex Thameside franchise) was sold to Trenitalia on February 10 2017. It had previously operated East Anglia (now Greater Anglia) until February 2012, East Coast (now LNER) until November 2009, and Gatwick Express (merged into Southern in June 2008, now part of GTR) – and various other franchises from privatisation until reorganisation in 2007. It was also operator of the West Midlands Metro light rail line until 2018.
