NEW ZEALAND: Auckland Transport has extended Transdev’s contract to operate suburban rail services to January 2020. The extension includes initiatives to improve passenger experience and increase security.

Ticket offices and customer service centres at five stations are to be combined by the end of July. This will be followed by a pilot scheme with 18 on-board Transport Officers, who will be able to issue penalty notices to fare evaders and provide assistance to passengers. Electronic ticket gates are to be rolled out at eight more stations over the next 18 months.

Auckland Transport aims to expand these initiatives from the rail network to its other modes.

  • Auckland Transport says that eight companies have been pre-qualified to submit expressions of interest to undertake tunnel and station work on the City Rail Link. Two of these are expected to be shortlisted for the works package later this year, before contract award next year.
