Heritage line opened 1999, modern light rail in 2009; network comprises three lines serving 59 stops.

A city-centre heritage line opened 1999, now known as Line T2, runs west from Müze to Zerdalilik (4·3 km, 10 stops).

A modern light rail route running from Meydan west across the city centre and then northwest to Fatih opened in December 2009 (Line T1: 11·5 km, 16 stops of which 2 are sub-surface). In 2014 work began on an extension northeast from Meydan to Expo (15·4 km, 15 stops) with a 2·4 km branch to the airport; services began on April 22 2016 with official opening on June 8 and full commercial service on July 14 2016.

Line T3, a route from Varsak Sakarya Bulvari south to Otogar, the university and Eğitim Araştırma Hastanesi, was approved in September 2017. This opened from Varsak to Kepez in March 2019 (8·2 km, 15 stops; plus 1·6 km depot access line at Varsak) and Kepez to Atatürk opened on August 11 2019 (2·8 km, 5 stops). An extension from Ataturk to Muze opened on October 25 2021 (6·7 km, 9 stops), providing interchange with east-west Line T1 at Otogar, and with heritage Line T2 at Müze - with that route scheduled to be upgraded and integrated as a through route with Line T3.
