First line opened 1897. Tramway has 5 routes with 81 stops.

In the late-1990s a RegioStadtbahn project for tram-trains was developed, and some dual-gauge track was installed in Braunschweig. By October 2010 the project was seen as uneconomic and was postponed indefinitely.
