Opened 1896, modern metro in 1970. Four line network with 48 stations. See Budapest network map.

The Millennium underground railway, now metro Line M1 (4·2 km, 11 stations), opened 1896, and was declared a World Heritage Site in 2002. The first section of modern metro (Line M2) opened 1970, and the first section of Line M3 opened in 1976 (16.6 km, 20 stations).

Line 4 opened on March 28, 2014 from Kelenföld vasútállomás to Keleti pályaudvar (7·4 km, 10 stations). Driverless operation is planned. An extension northeast to Bosnyák tér was planned, but a new tram route is now envisaged for this corridor.

An extensive tramway/light rail system operates across the city (first line opened 1866 as a horse tramway) with 25 routes serving 615 stops. Its most recent extension was tram Line 1 from Etele út west to Kelenföld vasútállomás (1·5 km, 3-stops). Other lines include suburban railways (HEV), owned by Budapest (5 routes with 71 stations), the Városmajor–Széchenyi hegy rack railway and the Buda Castle Hill funicular.

Ownership of HEV routes 5, 6, 8 & 9 transferred to MAV on November 24, 2016, whilst route H7 was incorporated into the city tram network. A fifth cross-city metro route, linking the north and HEV south suburban lines, is planned.
