The initial section of Phase I was officially opened on August 19 2002, having begun trial service on April 24 2002 over a ’Y’-shaped network from Şehreküstü in the city centre to Küçük Sanayi on the western branch, and Organize Sanayi on the northwest branch (17·5 km, 17 stations). An extension east from Sehreküstü to Arabayatagi opened on April 6 2008 (4·8 km, 6 stations).

The western branch (now Line 2) was extended to Özlüce on December 24 2010 (2·9 km, 3 stations), and further west to Üniversite on September 19 2011 (3·6 km, 3 stations). Continuation of the northwest branch (now Line 1) from Organize Sanayi to Emek was completed on December 15 2011 (2·5 km, 2 stations). The eastern corridor was extended from Arabayatagi to Gürsu in two sections in March 2014 (6·4 km, 6 stops), and reached Kestel on June 5 2014 (1·6 km, 1 station).

Line 1 was extended northwest from Emek to Geçit/Balat on March 28 2024 (1·2 km, 1 stations); from there it will continue west to the new mainline station and Bursa City Hospital (3·5 km, 3 stations); Line 2 is also being extended west with a short extension from Üniversite to Görükle (1 station). A loop off the eastern arm to serve the city’s southeastern district rejoining at Mimar Sinan/BTÜ is in planning.
