Light Rail AS (Bergen)

Light rail network opened 2010; two routes, serving 32 stops. See Bergen network map.

Bergen’s initial section of light railway linking the city centre at Byparken south to Nesttun terminal opened on June 22 2010 (9·8 km, 15 stops), with an extension to Lagunen opening on June 21 2013 (3·4 km, 5 stops). On August 15 2016 a further extension to Birkelandsskiftet opened (4·8 km, 5 stops), with the final section to Bergen Lufthavn entering service on April 22 2017 (2·4 km, 2 stops). Mountainous terrain has required many tunnelled sections.

A second line was approved in 2017 and opened on November 21 2022 (8·2 km, 5 new stops, plus 0·3 km service conncetion); Line 2 runs over the 0·7 km, three-stop city centre section opened with inauguration of Line 1 in 2010, and both lines serve Kronstad. Stadler Pankow supplied six more LRVs.

Line 2 runs southeast from the city a loops in tunnel under a main hospital to turn southwest, crossing Line 1 at Kronstad before and continuing southwest to Fyllingsdalen.

A 12·7 km route running north from Bergen city centre to Åsane with 14 stops was approved on May 31 2023.

Services are operated by Keolis Norge, which in 2018 won an eight-year contract from July 2019.
