Light rail project rejected in a referendum on November 1 2020 and development suspended.

Planning for a tram route began in 2001, but funding and political difficulties have stalled progress. Consultation on a revised scheme took place in 2018. This is for a 12·2 km metre gauge route from central Wiesbaden via Biebrich, Amöneburg and Mainz-Kastel to Theodor-Heuss-Brücke, crossing the Rhein and linking with the Mainz tram network. An initial fleet of 26 LRVs would be needed.

A further option is to extend further north from Wiesbaden along a reopened and regauged Aartalbahn.

CityBahn GmbH has been set up as a joint venture by MVG’s parent company Mainzer Stadtwerke AG to develop the project.
