Line A opened from Náměstí Míru west to Dejvická on August 12 1978. Extensions at both ends were added, reaching east to Depo Hostivar on May 27 2006, and west to Nemocnice Motol on April 6 2015.

The initial segment of Line B was from Florenc southwest to Smíchovské nádrazí, opened on November 2 1985. The line has been extended at both ends, reaching Cerný Most on November 8 1998.

A planned further extension of the line towards the airport has been deferred in favour of new Line D. Originally envisaged as a branch of Line C south from Pankrác to Pisnice in the south, Line D is to extend further north to also interchange with Line A at Námestí Míru.

The tram network is planned to expand to improve connectivity in districts not served by the metro. On April 9 2022 an extension southwest from Sidliste Barrandov to Holyne opened (1·0 km, 2 stops), extended further to Slivenec on October 13 2023 (0·7 km, 1 stop). In the south, an extension east from Levského to Libuš (1·8 km, 4 stops) opened on May 27 2023, whilst an extension from Divoka Sarka west to Dedina opened on October 23 2023 (2·0 km, 4 stops).
