First line opened 1978; three routes with 29 stations. See Edmonton network map.

The Northeast LRT between Belvedere and Central was opened on April 22 1978 as part of hosting the 1978 Commonwealth Games. The line was extended at both ends through the 1980s, and reached University in 1992. An extension south from there to South Campus opened April 2009, and was extended to Century Park on April 25 2010 (8 km, 2 stations).

A branch from the central tunnel section northwest to NAIT was opened on September 6 2015 (3·5 km, 3 stations). This operates through to the south end of the central tunnelled segment at Health Sciences as the Metro line, with the original route named the Capital line. Extension north to Blatchford Market is under construction.

The first phase of the Valley line running southeast from 102 Street to Mill Woods was due to open in summer 2021, but eventually opened on November 4 2023 (13·1 km, 12 stops). This new route uses a fleet of 26 low-floor LRVs supplied by Alstom (Bombardier). Extension west to Lewis Farms (14 km, 16 stops) is planned to open in 2028.

In planning are extensions of Metro line northwest from Blatchford to Castle Downs and Campbell Rd, then continuing to link to the neighbouring city of St Albert, and extension of the Capital line at both ends, further southwest from Century Park to Desrochers and northeast from Clareview to Gorman.
