First line opened 1901; network comprises five routes serving 76 stops

An extension from Robert-Koch-Straße north to Messe opened as far as Technische Fakultät on November 11 2015 (Line 4, 1·5 km, four stops), this being completed to Messe on December 13 2020 (1·0 km, 1 stop). A link along Rotteckring from Heinrich-von-Stephan-Straße to Europaplatz opened on March 16 2019 (1·9 km, four stops).

In June 2018 VAG ordered firve Urbos LRVs from CAF; these are due in 2020 and will replace the city’s remaining high-floor GT8K trams.
