Construction began in 2007, and this initial section of The Tide light rail line from EVMC / Fort Norfolk via down-town Norfolk east to Newtown Road opened on August 19 2011.
Extension of the line east to Virginia Beach was considered, but the scheme was discontinued after a 2016 referendum voted against the project.
