IAF was established in 1991 as a professional organisation to promote rail transport and be a focus for international relations. It undertakes research and planning, and offers advice on construction, development and operation of rail projects, as well as helping raise the profile of the rail industry.
IAF is a partner in Ferrocarril Unión Pacífico and also provides technical services to other companies.
IAF publishes the bimonthly magazine Redes de Integración (RDI – Integration Networks).
