Initial section opened 2019; single line serving 26 stops. See Zürich network map.

Construction of a metre-gauge inter-urban tram-train route heading west from Zürich-Altstetten to Geissweid (Schlieren), Dietikon, Spreitenbach and Killwangen began on August 28 2017 (total line 13·4 km, 27 stops). The first phase to Geissweid opened on September 2 2019 (2·9 km, 7 stops), initially served only by Verkehrsbetriebe Zürich’s Line 2; this section is equipped with 600V DC supply.

The rest of the line opened on December 11 2022, and is electrified at 1·2 kV DC for compatibility with Aargau Verkehr AG (AVA)’s Line S17 at Dietikon, comprising three sections:

  • Altstetten – Farbhof (0·8 km);
    then multiplexed with VBZ’s Line 2 (2·9 km, 7 stops) to:
  • Schlieren – Bahnhof Dietikon (4·3 km)
    then multiplexed with AVA’s Line S17 (300m) then:
  • Dietikon Zentrum – Killwangen-Spreitenbach (5·1 km)

Limmattalbahn AG is jointly owned by the cantons of Zürich and Aargau, with AVA having a contract to operate the line for 10 years.

Although opened as Line 20, the route may later be allocated an S-Bahn line number, similar to AVA’s other routes and the Forchbahn.
