First line opened 1904. Tramway comprises three main lines with branches radiating from Hauptbahnhof; the network is operated by five service routes, serving 60 stops. Many sections have been upgraded to light rail standards on segregated alignment.
On December 11 2016 the Mainzelbahn line opened, running southwest to the university, Marienborn and Lerchenberg (9·2 km, 16 stops). A short branch from Bismarckplatz to Zollhafen north of the city centre opened on October 16 2017 (0·9 km, 2 stops).
In planning is the CityBahn project to link north to Wiesbaden. From MVG’s network at Hauptbahnhof West, the line would cross the Rhein on the Theodor-Heuss-Brücke, then run northwest via Mainz-Kastel, Amöneburg and Biebrich to link to a new tram network serving Wiesbaden, and possibly on to a reopened and regauged Aartalbahn. CityBahn GmbH has been set up as a joint venture by MVG’s parent company Mainzer Stadtwerke AG to develop the project.
