Work began in 2009 on construction of Line 1 (16 stops) of a planned tram-train network running south from Central to Gutiérrez. The line began public services in April 2012 using a fleet of ex-San Diego Trolley LRVs.
On May 7 2019 the line was extended north from Central to Avellaneda (5·4 km, 9 stops).
Extensions further north to the airport, south to Maipú, and a Y-shaped branch serving the Carrodilla district are planned.
