Metro opened 1971; six routes serving 100 stations. First tram line opened 1876, 13 routes with 174 stops. See München network map.

The metro network comprises three cross-city tunnels, served by six full operating routes and two supplementary routes. Metro extension projects are:

  • U5 – Laimer Platz, west to Pasing (3·6 km, 3 stations), under construction
  • U6 – Klinikum Großhadern west to Martinsried (1·3 km, 1 station), under construction for opening in 2022.
  • U9 – fourth cross-city tunnel, running north-south from Münchner Freiheit to Implerstraße in planning (providing interchange with the second S-Bahn tunnel, under construction)

In July 2020 a fleet of 22 six-car trains for lines U2 and U6 was ordered from Siemens Mobility for delivery from 2022, adding to the 45 units already purchased.

The tram network is being developed and expanded after some closures. Line 23 does not provide public service connection with other tram routes. On December 11 2016 a new tram route east to Berg am Laim (2·7 km, 6 stops) was opened. Two tangential tram routes are being developed, to link across the north and the west of the city.

In July 2019 Stadtwerke München exercised an option to buy 73 more four-section Avenio LRVs from Siemens Mobility for delivery from 2021.
