Historic tramway with modern extensions; five routes serving 99 stops.
Dating back to 1835 and now a historical monument, the remaining St Charles line (10·4 km, 47 stops) was augmented in 1988 by the Riverfront line (2·5 km, 9 stops). In 2004, the Canal Street line was reopened (6·1 km, 33 stops, 2 branches), and the Loyola - Union Passenger Terminal line opened on January 28 2013 (1·3 km, 4 stops plus shared alignment on Canal St). Groundbreaking took place on January 28 2015 for a fifth route (2·6 km, 6 stops) extending the Loyola Avenue line northeast from Rampart to Elysian Fields Ave; the line opened on October 2 2016.
