The metro provides dense coverage in Osaka city centre through a grid of lines, some extending through-running to suburban routes.

Three metro lines operate through-running of services with suburban routes as follows:

  • Line 1 at Esaka north onto to the Kitakyū Namboku line to Senri-Chuo; connection commissioned in 1970, serving additional 5·9 km, 3 stations.
  • Line 4 at Nagata east onto Kintetsu Railway’s Keihanna (Yumehanna) line to Ikoma/Gakken Nara-Tomigaoka; connection commissioned in 1986, serving additional 18·8 km, 8 stations.
  • Line 6 at Tenjimbashisuji Rokuchōme north onto the Hankyu Railway’s Senri and Kyoto Main lines; connection implemented with line opening in 1969: two routes are served: to Kita-Senri on the Senri line (13·6 km, 10 stations), and on the Hankyu Kyoto Main interurban route to Awaji and continuing northeast to Kyoto Kawaramachi and Arashiyama stations (45·3 km, 25 stations).

Osaka Metro also operates the New Tram intermediate capacity elevated rubber-tyred peoplemover serving the port district, running west from Suminoekōen at the south end of Line 3 to Cosmosquare on Line 4. On January 19 2025 Line 4 was extended west from Cosmosquare to Yumeshima, the island venue for the 2025 World Expo (3·2 km, 1 station). A further extension is planned to loop back east through the port area via Maishima to Sakurajima (JR-West branch terminus).
