O-Train
Initial diesel ‘light rail’ route opened 2001 but currently suspended for expansion. Electrified light rail line opened 2019 (Confederation / Line 1); single line, serving 13 stops. See Ottawa network map.
The Trillium Line (Line 2) was inaugurated in 2001 as a local service over a section of what was an active CP freight line. From Bayview west of the city centre (interchange with Line 1) it ran south to Greenboro (Line 2: 8 km, 5 stations) as a link between two branches of the city’s dedicated busway network.
The city’s Stage 2 plan to extend the route was approved in March 2019, with service was suspended from May 2 2020 for engineering work as part of the extension south to Limebank, with a branch from South Keys to Ottawa/Macdonald–Cartier International Airport (Line 4), together adding 16 km and six stations, with a further two stops added to the original route. The Trillium Line reopened with the new airport branch on January 6 2025, with seven Flirt DEMUs from Stadler supplementing the fleet.
Following approval in 2010, the first phase of the Confederation Line opened on September 14 2019 (12·5 km, 13 stops). This electrically-worked light rail line runs east from Tunney’s Pasture to Blair via a 2·5 km city centre tunnel section and the Bayview interchange.
The Stage 2 extension of Line 2 is also under construction, with work beginning in mid-2019. The line will extend east to Trim (12 km, 5 stops) and west to Algonquin (15 km, 11 stops) with a branch to Moodie (Line 3). Opening east to Trim is planned for 2024 and completion by 2025.
