Rubber-tyred metro Line 1 was opened in 1977-78, with the southern leg extended from Castellane to La Timone in September 1992. A further extension from La Timone to La Fourragère opened on May 6 2010 (2·5 km, 4 stops). North-south Line 2 was opened in phases between March 1984 and February 1987; a short extension north from Bougainville to Gèze opened on December 16 2019 (0·9 km, 1 station).

Metro running is to be fully automated, with Alstom winning a contract for conversion of both routes to driverless operation by 2026.

The city has also developed a three-line tram system, with the initial 10·3 km opened 2007, and further extensions opened 2008 and 2010. The extension south to Castellane opened on May 30 2015 (1·2 km, 5 stops), operating as new Line T3 running through from Arenc. Extensions opened north to Gèze on January 7 2026 (1·8 km, 3 stops) and south to La Gaye on January 10 2026 (4·4 km, 8 stops), lengthening service T3 to 16 km.
