Opened 1983. Three operating routes serving 32 stops.

The Utrecht–Nieuwegein Sneltram opened on December 17 1983, with the Doorslag branch extended to Ijsselstein on December 14 1985 (total 20·7 km, 23 stops).

A route from the main station across the south side of the city to Uithof in the east opened on December 16 2019 (route 22: 7·5 km, 9 stops). This will operate through onto the original Sneltram line and branch, which has been undergoing rebuilding for low-floor LRV operation, from mid-2021 as routes 20/21.

On January 18 2017 the Province of Utrecht placed a follow-on order with CAF for 22 seven-section Urbos 100 LRVs, in addition to the 27 five-section low-floor LRVs ordered in 2015. As well as operating the new Uithof line, they replaced the original Sneltram high-floor cars from January 3 2021.

Services are operated by Trenitalia subsidiary Qbuzz, under contract to the Utrecht provincial transport agency Regiotram until 2023.
