First electric tramway opened 1904. Network comprises central loop line with 7 branches, operated as 6 service routes with 64 stops.
The most recent extension formed the west side of the central loop from Kröpeliner Tor to Stadthalle (1·1 km, 2 stops) in August 2006. An order for 28 TINA trams from Stadler was signed on June 24 2022; these will replace the 6N1 fleet from 2025.
A 4 km extension of routes 3/6 from Zoo to Reutershagen is planned by 2030, adding 6 stops, but with closure of the one-stop section from Zoo to Neuer Friedhof.
