Opened 1971. Three-line rubber-tyred transit network serving 46 stations.

The north-south Namboku (Green) line opened on December 16 1971 from Makomanai north to Kita nijuyo-jo (12·1 km, 14 stations). It was the world’s first metro line to use rubber-tyred rolling stock with a central guideway. The line was extended north to Asabu on March 16 1978 (2·2 km, 2 stations).

The northwest-southeast Tozai (Orange) line between Kotoni and Shiroishi followed on June 10 1976 (9·9 km, 11 stations), and was extended further east to Shin Sapporo on March 21 1982 (7·4 km, 6 stations), and northwest to Miyanosawa on February 25 1999 (2·8 km, 2 stations).

The second north-south route, Toho (Blue) line, opened from Sakaemachi to Hosui-Susukino on December 2 1988 (8·1 km, 9 stations), extended southeast to Fukuzumi on October 14 1994 (5·5 km, 5 stations).

The city also operates a short city centre streetcar loop as metro feeder, completed December 20 2015 (9·0 km, 24 stops).
