First line opened 1894. Network comprises four radial route with 37 stops, run as two service routes.

The line south from Zwickau Zentrum to Stadthalle (1·7 km) is dual 1000 mm/1435 mm gauge, connecting to the mainline network in Schledewitz; since 1999 Vogtlandbahn RegioSprinter units have provided through services from Kraslice and Cheb into Zwickau Zentrum operated by Die Länderbahn GmbH over SVZ track.

A 1 km route from Georgenplatz to the main station has been periodically out-of-use, operating from 2005-09, but closing again in December 2019, since when only lines 3 and 4 have operated.
