Tampereen Ratikka

Opened August 2021; two-line light rail network serving 33 stops. See Tampere network map.

Construction of Tampere’s first ever tramway began in 2017. Full revenue service began on August 9 2021 over two routes: from Sorin aukio via the main station then east to the central hospital (Line 1: 3·9 km, 9 stops); plus a second longer route from Pyynikintori on the west side of the city centre via a 1·1 km, four-stop section shared with Line 1 and then branching southeast to Hervantajärvi (Line 3: 11·5 km, 19 stops). At Hervantajärvi a 1·1 km service branch connects to the depot.

The first section of a second phase extending the main route west from Pyynikintori to Santalahti opened on August 7 2023 (2 km, 3 stops). The continuation northwards to Lentävänniemi and Pyhällönpuisto opened on January 7 2025 (4·6 km, 6 stops). The service routes have also been recast.

Further extensions are planned - with work on extending the southern branch from Sorin aukio southwest to Pirkkala due to begin in 2025, along with a short extension of the eastern branch.

Škoda Transportation subsidiary Transtech supplied the initial fleet of 19 LRVs, with options for another 46 later.

VR Group has been selected as operator.
