VRR AöR plans, co-ordinates and finances public transport in the Rhein-Ruhr area.
In October 2015 VRR announced 15-year contracts to operate a network of five regional express routes (RRX) from 2018 had been awarded to Abellio Rail NRW (RE1/11) and National Express (RE4/5/6); and in July 2016 it announced that Abellio Deutschland’s Abellio Rail NRW GmbH subsidiary would take over operation of six S-Bahn Rhein-Ruhr routes from December 2019 (S2, 3 & 9 and RB3, 40 & 41).
