First metro line opened 1976. Network now comprises 5 lines (U6 being a light metro line) with 109 stations. See Wien network map.

Metro line U1 was extended south to Oberlaa on September 2 2017 (4·6 km, 5 stations). Work on the U2xU5 project to rebuild the city centre section of line U2 and create new line U5 began in February 2018, with line U2 closed from Schottentor to Karlsplatz between 2021-24 whilst links to a new alignment for U2 southwest to new platforms at Rathaus were constructed. The new alignment will continue south to Pilgramgasse (U4) and Matzleinsdorfer Platz. The existing U2 tunnels from just north of Rathaus to Karlsplatz (~2 km) will eventually transfer to new line U5. This is planned to extend northwest beyond Frankhplatz to Michelbeurn and Elterleinplatz in the longer term.

Tram network expanding once more
Wiener Linien operates an extensive tram network (28 lines), with the Wiener Lokalbahn sharing tracks from Oper/Karlsplatz to Schedifkaplatz. Some sections have closed, notably when new sections of metro have been built. However new tram infrastructure has also been built: tram line D was extended to Absberggasse on December 2 2019 (1·1 km, 3 stops) and Route O was extended to Bruno-Marek-Allee on October 3 2020 (1·0 km, 2 stops). Line 12 was introduced on September 1 2025 from Hillerstraße on new infrastructure to Rebhanngasse (2·0 km, 5 stops), and then replacing much of route 33 around the northwest of the city. On October 6 2025 a branch northeast of the Donau opened from Prinzgasse to Aspern Nord (2·4 km, 6 stops); the day before shortened route 33 ran for the last time.

On the city centre side of the Donau, an extension of Line 18 northeast from Ludwig Koeßler Platz to Stadion and Dr-Natterer-Gasse is under construction (2·6 km).
