First line opened 1892. Modernised tramway system, operated as 5 routes with 47 stops serving the city and south to Rottenbauer.
Two extensions are planned, but work has yet to start:
- extension of the Grombühl loop northeast along Josef-Schneider-Straße to Oberdürrbacher Straße is planned (1·2 km, 3 stops),
- new route southeast from the centre from Juliuspromenade/Barbarossaplatz south of the main station via Südbahnhof to the university campus at Hubland (4·8 km, 11 stops).
A fleet of 18 LRVs was ordered from HeiterBlick on December 9 2019, to allow replacement of the city’s oldest trams.
