The first light rail route opened on August 15, 2003 from Porta del Mar to El Campello, extended in stages 2007-09 serving the coastal districts. Line 2 to Sant Vicent del Raspeig opened on September 4, 2013 (7 km, 11 stops). After rerouting of Line 4 services to Luceros in June 2013 the Sangueta − Porta del Mar branch was without service until June 10, 2019, when Line 5 services began running from the Playa de San Juan loop to Porta del Mar.

The city-centre connection from Luceros to Término is under construction.

Operations are contracted to Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat Valenciana (FGV).
