First tram lines opened in 1890s. The network now comprises 2 Stadtbahn light metro and 7 tram routes.

The original network of street-running tram routes has seen some upgrading to segregated light rail, and a single route (U35) runs as ‘Stadtbahn’ light metro, opened to Herne in 1989 and extended south to Hustadt in 1993. Essen’s line U11 also serves part of the Bogestra region.

A 2·6 km extension from Unterstrasse to Langendreer S-Bahn opened on October 7, 2017; a 2·1 km link south from Langendreer Markt to the present line to Crengeldanz and Witten is under construction.
