First line opened 1910. The network expanded until the 1970s, since when it retrenched to a 24 km network in Helwan to the south of Cairo (feeding metro Line 1) and a 36 km network in Heliopolis to the northeast, comprising four Cairo–Heliopolis routes and some local routes in Heliopolis.
