Opened March 22 2010, the Red Line commuter route runs from Leander in the north to Downtown terminal in central Austin, serving nine intermediate stations. It operates over track used by Austin Western Railroad freight services using a fleet of Stadler GTW DMUs. A Green Line is planned from Downtown east to Colony Park (11 km, 5 stations), with a later three station extension to Elgin proposed (total 43 km).

In November 2020 a local vote approved the Project Connect plan to construct a light rail network. The initial phase covers a core north-south route from North Lamar via interchange with the Red line at Crestview to an underground station at Republic Square (12·5 km, 10 stops). From here the Orange Line would continue south to Stassney (7·7 km, 6 stops), with the Blue Line running southwest to the airport via a 2·6 km city centre tunnel section and Downtown terminal (12·9 km, 9 stops). Later extensions proposed would lengthen the Orange Line to 32 km with 22 stops. The plans were approved by the Texas House of Representatives on May 5 2021, with opening planned from 2028.
